Protein Packed Chocolate Milkshake: A Pregnancy Treat!

I find myself wanting ice cream more now that I'm pregnant. I'm not sure if it's because of the sugar or my new found love of dairy. I did read online it's a good craving to indulge in, in moderation, because at the very least it has calcium. I only wish it would fill me up a bit more, for longer anyway. Enter protein powder. We have huge tubs of this stuff because my hubby is a fitness buff, and honestly it doesn't taste all that bad. But when you add milk and chocolate ice cream, it's certainly more satisfying.

Protein Chocolate Milkshake
      serves 1 happy mama
  • 1/2 scoop Chocolate Protein Powder, I use Optimum Nutrition brand (60 calories)
  • 1/2 cup Chocolate Ice Cream (170 calories)
  • 1/2 cup 1% Organic Milk (60 calories)
  • 1 tsp. Baking Cocoa Powder (3 calories)
  • 1/2 tsp. Truvia Baking Blend (5 calories)
  • 1 tsp. Chia Seeds (23 calories)
Add all of your ingredients in the blender, blend until thick and creamy. You may need to throw in a couple of ice cubes. The Vitamix tends to heat food up just slightly, so I added two ice cubes and it kept the shake nice and cold.

This shake is 321 calories, 13 grams of fat, 21 total carbs, 20 grams of sugar, and 22 grams of protein! Plus it has 32% of your daily calcium, not bad! I can have one of these after dinner, and it will definitely help stave off middle of the night hunger. If you're pregnant or have been pregnant, you know how annoying it is to wake up at 4 am STARVING. Then you try to go back to sleep, but the baby starts kicking because she's hungry too. So by the time you get back into bed after making yourself a snack, your alarm goes off another hour later and then it's time for work. I have to say, that's not my favorite thing. And the bigger baby gets, the hungrier mama gets. So I'm certain this milkshake will be making a weekly appearance for the time being.
